Fascinated by Trees 2022

Photograph, 61 x 76 cm

@ Rosie Horn

Trees are a community but we haven’t realised that until recently. I have been fascinated to learn that trees communicate and support their family through a network of mycorrhizal fungi in the soil. They also support a many life systems outside of their family. Susan Simard's research has revealed much about the social relationships of trees. Another researcher, Meg Lowman, studies forest tree canopies, and has found that they support so much life. Up to half of the world's species live in forest canopies. Trees are special, and we are so linked to them. They bring life and light into the world.

I love trees! I photographed this one in the Brook Waimārama Sanctuary, the largest fenced sanctuary for endangered plants and creatures in the South Island.
