Depictions Or The Real Thing? 2022

Photograph, 50 x 60 cm

@ Rosie Horn

I printed this image on a nasturtium leaf and made the exposure using the sun. I was looking for ways to make photographs with lower impacts from printing. Printing on leaves means I can grow my own printing medium, and compost any that don't turn out. The sun is my light source so I need to plan my printing around the weather. All this slows down my image making and puts me in touch with the environment.

The image is of cupboards in a bakery, with a picture of wheat fields on the doors. Nature images are often used to market products and to create a calm ambience in indoor environments. I find this both fascinating and concerning. Nature images make us feel calmer, and we enjoy depictions of nature, but do we prefer the depictions over the real thing? Can we actually connect to the real thing and act on our appreciation of nature?
