LaVon Van Williams, Jr. was born in Lakeland, Florida, however his roots began in Sanford, where his grandparents, David and Pearl Wright, lived. David, a fireman for the Atlantic Coastline Railroad, privately wrote poems and played the harmonica for Pearl.

From early childhood, LaVon inherited the glory of his artist gift. His mother and uncle loved to draw and excelled as sketch artists, while his great uncle, Luke Wright, worked as a cowboy in the southwest. Luke's true gift was the art of carving, and he was prolific in his craft.

LaVon, along with his brother, Dave, unfailingly observed Luke's execution of his craft, his gift, and his talent, and both began to express their own exceptional artistic talents.
